Astro Motors makes world’s first manual electric three-wheeler

Astro Motors, an emerging electric vehicle (EV) company, has successfully designed and manufactured the world’s first manual electric three-wheeler vehicle and bagged a purchase order to deliver 1000 units of its model, the Astro Triyaan NAVYA.

Astro Motors, an emerging electric vehicle (EV) company, has successfully designed and manufactured the world’s first manual electric three-wheeler vehicle and bagged a purchase order to deliver 1000 units of its model, the Astro Triyaan NAVYA. Several electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured by Astro Motors are currently undergoing a pilot run across various parts of India by logistics companies like SKS Cleantech and Loadex Supply Chain Solutions.

Astro Motors‘ current model, the Astro Triyaan NAVYA, is a cargo three-wheeler L5 segment vehicle powered by a 10.2 kwh battery having a payload capacity of 635 kgs with a range of 120kms and a electronically limited top speed of 50 kmph. Vitan Jagada, Founder of Astro Motors, said, “We are elated with the success and response that we are receiving for our three-wheelers. While we see this as just the beginning of the EV market in India, we are already planning to increase our manufacturing capacities. In the ongoing pilot run of Astro Navya, the vehicle has been outperforming most of the three-wheelers in this space and is able to reach to the last mile of connectivity. In the near future, we will also be delivering at least 3000 units to these companies, and we are in the final phase of the discussions.”

The Astro NAVYA is also the first three-wheeler electric vehicle to successfully conquer the world’s highest motorable road at Umling La Pass, located in Ladakh at 19,024 ft. The vehicles have effectively been tested across different terrains and weather conditions in various parts of India, demonstrating their capabilities of penetrating the EV market by delivering high-performance three-and reliable vehicles.

“We are witnessing a revolution in the Indian logistics industry with EVs. The government and policymakers are playing a proactive role in decarbonizing the e-commerce and logistics sectors and transitioning to electric mobility faster. As the future roadmap and infrastructure are being set-up across states in India, we at Astro Motors are ready with the technology that will be needed to help increase the adoption of EVs,” added Kunal Chandra, Co-founder, Astro Motors.

Overdrive: Astro Navya is the first 3-wheeled EV to reach Umling La pass

By accomplishing this accomplishment, Astro Motors successfully illustrated how its lineup of high-performance 3-wheeled freight vehicles can enter the EV market. Astro Navya is made to accommodate several geographical demands in India, including those of the hilly, exceptionally high-moisture regions of Maharashtra, the cold, steep mountain lands of Ladakh, the intense heat of Delhi and Gujarat, and the densely populated cities of Bengaluru.

A 10.2 kWh battery powers the three-wheeled cargo vehicle Astro Navya, which has a payload capacity of 630 kg and a peak speed of 50 kmph. Pratiksha Das, the first female B.E.S.T. certified driver in India, piloted the Astro Navya with the assistance of a capable Astro Motors crew.

Commenting on this achievement, Vitan Jagada, Founder, Astro Motors said, “We are extremely thrilled about achieving this milestone and are happy to present a product that has demonstrated its capability at the highest level. Even the high altitude of the Ladakh region with thinner air and temperatures sub-zero at 1 pm did not impact the performance of the vehicle, so this is very encouraging as the drive was carried out with a full
payload. We are the only company to have successfully mated a manual gearbox to an electric motor and synchronised the same to maximise the performance and made it available for the public. We are on a mission to create trust in Electric Vehicles for people to transition from ICE vehicles with complete peace of mind and this is the first step in our journey.”

Shifting Gears: Astro Motors Navya crosses Umling La Pass

Electric three-wheeler maker Astro Motors has set a new record by taking their electric vehicle, the Astro Navya, to Umling La Pass – the world’s highest motorable road. Umling La is located in Ladakh, and the altitude is 19,024 feet.

Apart from the marketing exercise, by driving their electric three-wheeler to Umling La, Astro Motors have successfully demonstrated the capabilities of the EV. The vehicle can be deployed in a host of regions across India, from the old and steep mountain lands of Ladakh to the extreme heat of Delhi and Gujarat to hilly and extremely high moisture areas of Maharashtra and high traffic zones of Bengaluru.

Capability of the Astro Navya

The three-wheeler cargo vehicle is powered by an electric motor and a 10.2 kWh battery pack. It has a payload capacity of 630 kg and a top speed of 50 km/h. The EV uniquely gets a manual transmission mated to the electric motor.

Drive at Umling La

The Astro Navya was driven by Pratiksha Das, who is India’s first female BEST licensed driver. Apart from the challenges of High Altitude, there was also the difficulty of a very cold climate. However, the thin air and the sub-zero temperatures did not affect the Navya. It was especially because the vehicle was driven with a full-rated payload of 630 kg.

Potential of EV cargo vehicles in India

Given the rising demand for doorstep delivery and the emergence of e-commerce, there is a need for last-mile connectivity for the delivery of cargo. The L5 segment, in which electric cargo vehicles fall, has shown a YoY growth of 101.32%. EVs currently comprise 1% of total sales, and the figure is expected to increase to 2% for the current year. The Government of India has also set a target to increase the adoption of EVs.
